- První: If + přítomný čas, will + sloveso – reálná budoucnost (If it rains, I will stay home).
- Druhá: If + minulý čas, would + sloveso – nereálná přítomnost (If I had money, I would travel). „If I were…“
- Nultá: If + přítomný čas, přítomný čas – obecné pravdy (If you heat ice, it melts).
- Třetí: If + had + 3. tvar, would have + 3. tvar – nereálná minulost (If I had known, I would have come).
