- S členom „the“: oceány, moria, rieky, pohoria, súostrovia a štáty v množnom čísle (the Alps, the Danube, the USA). Bez člena: jednotlivé hory, jazerá, väčšina krajín (Lake Balaton, Mount Everest, France).
- Inštitúcie podľa účelu bez člena: go to school/hospital/prison/church (ako žiak, pacient…). S „the“, ak ideme tam z iného dôvodu.
- „the + prídavné meno“ označuje skupinu ľudí: the rich, the elderly, the unemployed.
- Všeobecne hovoríme bez člena (Life is short, Money isn't everything). Konkrétna vec má „the“ (the life of Mozart).
