- S členem „the“: oceány, moře, řeky, pohoří, souostroví a státy v množném čísle (the Alps, the Danube, the USA). Bez členu: jednotlivé hory, jezera, většina zemí (Lake Balaton, Mount Everest, France).
- Instituce podle účelu bez členu: go to school/hospital/prison/church (jako žák, pacient…). S „the“, jdeme-li tam z jiného důvodu.
- „the + přídavné jméno“ označuje skupinu lidí: the rich, the elderly, the unemployed.
- Obecně mluvíme bez členu (Life is short, Money isn't everything). Konkrétní věc má „the“ (the life of Mozart).
