- Po uvádzacom slovese v minulosti sa čas posúva späť: am → was, will → would, can → could, have done → had done, did → had done.
- Menia sa aj časové a miestne výrazy: today → that day, tomorrow → the next day, yesterday → the day before, here → there, this → that.
- V nepriamej otázke je slovosled oznamovací (bez do/does/did): She asked where I lived. Pri otázkach áno/nie použijeme if/whether.
- Uvádzacie slovesá: tell somebody, say (to somebody), ask somebody to do, advise, warn somebody not to do, suggest doing.

- "I am tired." → She said she was tired.
- "I will call you." → He promised he would call me.
- "I can swim." → She said she could swim.
- "I have finished." → He said he had finished.
- "We saw the film." → They said they had seen the film.
- "I am working." → She said she was working.
- "I'll do it tomorrow." → He said he would do it the next day.
- "I met him yesterday." → She said she had met him the day before.
- "I live here." → He said he lived there.
- "Where do you live?" → She asked me where I lived.
- "Are you hungry?" → He asked me if I was hungry.
- "What time is it?" → She asked what time it was.
- "Did you call him?" → He asked whether I had called him.
- She told me that she was leaving.
- He said that he was busy.
- The doctor advised me to drink more water.
- She warned us not to touch the dog.
- He suggested taking a taxi.
- My mum asked me to wash the dishes.
- "Don't be late!" → She told us not to be late.
